"Mountain Storm" 2003

Mountain Storm was a challenge quilt that I made for my
Austin quilt guild.  The quilt had to incorporate a lightening
bolt somewhere in the quilt.  If you look closely, you will see
the lightning bolt appears as the far distant mountain range
in light blue.

Pounded Leaf Quilts

Pounding leaves on fabric is an old Cherokee Indian technique,
used for decorating wearing apparel. It was resurrected by quilter,
Iris Aycock of Alabama.
The Fabric is first prepared by soaking in an alum and soda ash
solution to prepare the fibers to accept the dye that is in the leaves.
Once the fabric is dried, a fresh leaf is laid out on the fabric, then taped
down with a masking tape. The leaf is then pounded with a hammer until
the chlorophyll in the leaf leaves an impression in the fabric. The fabric
is then "fixed" and dried. In the process of fixing the image, it usually
turns a nutmeg brown color.

"Grannie"

This is a quilt portrait of my grandmother, Jean Baird Pugh, 1891-1991.  She was born in Napoleonville, Louisiana.   It appears in the book, Lonestar Quilts: 1985-2011 published by the University of Texas press.   "Grannie" also was part of the International Quilt Festival traveling exhibition "I Remember Mama."

The quilt was created from a charcoal drawing of my grandmother when she was 80 years old.  She was not happy to be sitting for the portrait, hence her rather unhappy expression.

"Grannie," which is about 24" X 30" was done while taking an online class through Quilt University by Marilyn Belford

2004 - "Christ Church"

This quilt was made from photographs I took of the historic Episcopal church in Napoleonville, LA.  On the national register of historical places, Christ Church was built in 1850.  Two of its founding members were my great, great grandparents: William Whitmel Hill Pugh and his wife, Josephine Nicholls Pugh.

The quilt, Christ Church was entered in the Tactile Architecture of the Houston International Quilt Show in 2004.
